Making
a Difference in Malawi To whom much is given, much is expected! Recognising that we now have a wonderful suite of buildings, we want them to be well used, but to keep us from only thinking of ourselves, we have decided to go and help a situation in the developing world that has things to teach us. 12 people form Broadwater Baptist are planning on going on a Soapbox Mission in the summer, to Malawi in Africa.
Soapbox is a Christian organisation with considerable experience in short term mission and a number of individuals from this church have been to different parts of the world helping, serving and building. This is the first time that more than 2 people from this church have been on such a mission, giving us a huge challenge for fund raising and a wonderful opportunity for a church trial. Five of the team will be going for 5 weeks, one for 3 weeks and the remaining for 2 weeks. The work will mainly entail building and children’s work in a very poor school. We will be paying for our own building materials and all transport and hospitality needs, which mean that a staggering £20,000 has to be raised. We will be going to the village of Salami, ten miles from beautiful Lake Malawi, where there is one school for all the children that live there. The school is falling down and unfinished. The SoapBox team will be assisting in maintenance and building work and so the team consists of engineers, builders and teachers as well as handymen and general encouragers. To help us raise the funds, we have already held a quiz night and individuals have been busying themselves raising sponsorship and encouraging support. Our latest event was a sponsored cycle ride – covering the distance on exercise bikes that it is from here to Malawi - a total of 5000 miles. Yes, five thousand miles! Around 80 people from the church helped in the event and it is tribute to a much energised church that so many came along to help. In the following weeks we will be telling everyone how the fund raising is going and – equally as important – how the prayer support is going. Watch this space. |
